So I’ve got a new project.
I found a military map of Northern Va. from 1865 and saw that some of the road and area names were the same, so I decided to overlay snippets from Google Maps. The results were so fascinating! There were all these roads that I didn’t know were that old. I went and found even more high res maps from the Library of Congress website—I didn’t know it was so comprehensive and available online.
This first map is from the very late 1700s; I forgot exactly when. The other maps are after the jump and are excerpted from the huge 1865 map. If you want to see the whole high res thing, you can email me (email address is in “About Me”) and I’ll send it to you. Click the maps to see slightly larger versions.
Edit: The full, high res version of the 1865 map with the Google maps as layers can be downloaded as a PSD file here.
