Recommended Movies
I have a ton of favorite movies. See what they are and then go see them.
The Matrix trilogy (1999-2003)
A sci fi classic which brought the whole cyberpunk thing to the attention of the mainstream. The first movie is the best, and the sequels weren't amazing, but I liked the overall storyline.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Be prepared to watch this several times before you understand it. Even then you might not. This cult classic is a little bit funny but mostly just trippy.
Stardust (2007)
This movie is based off a novel by Neil Gaiman. The story is set in a typical medieval fantasy setting, but the story and characters are all very sweet. A feel-good fantasy chick flick.
Zoolander (2001)
This movie makes me laugh every time. Stiller and Wilson are a fantastic duo, and Will Ferrell is great too. A classic comedy that I never get tired of.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Absurd, funny, and NSFW. You'll want to watch it for the winning cast and the pop culture references you kept missing and will now understand.
Star Wars series (1977-2005)
These movies pretty much defined the science fiction genre for the movie industry. As a bona fide nerd, I can say I love these movies.
Amélie (2001)
An adorable French movie featuring one of my favorite actresses, Audrey Tautou. It tells the story of a girl who is shy and likes to do anonymous good deeds - but she must overcome her shyness to find love!
The Triplets of Belleville (2003)
A strange, slightly morbid, but also kind of cute French animated movie. The art is different and the music is amazing.
Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003)
This is a fantasy classic. Very long but definitely worth it for the great special effects, acting, casting, and well, everything. I'm not surprised it swept the Academy Awards.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
This is a classic. It's not terribly scary (gave me the jitters for a few nights) and I feel sorrt for you if you know the plot twist and haven't yet seen the movie. :(
Hamilton Mattress (2001)
From the studio that brought you Hamilton Mattress comes a strange story about an aardvark who is a talented drummer. He finds himself in the world of the beautiful people (tropical birds) and everyone learns about not judging a book by its cover.
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (2001)
This anime, like many animes, has amazing artwork and a trippy sci fi storyline. However, this is known for its particularly amazing art. Also it features a cute corgi.
Mean Girls (2004)
This is a serious classic. It makes me laugh every time and the amazing cattiness of all the girls is a treat to follow. I'm glad my high school wasn't like this though. Don't call it a chick flick! All of my male friends love this movie too.
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
This is one of those heart-wrenching movies that has you wide-eyed the whole time. It's interesting to see fantasy from an unconvential perspective, and I love the historical tinge.
Paycheck (2003)
A clever story based off of a Philip K. Dick short story. It seems like a generic thriller, but its sci fi roots make it fascinating and fun to keep up with.
Minority Report (2002)
Another original Philip K. Dick short story turned into a great sci fi thriller. The precog reminds me of Bjork.
Planet of the Apes (1968)
This movie is so trippy and original. It comments on how we treat animals and the plot twist at the end is ridiculous.
An American Tail (1986)
This movie about a little Russian immigrant mouse who comes to New York City is an interesting historical story which will also melt your brain with its cuteness. "Somewhere Out There" is an absolutely adorable song.
The Aristocats (1970)
I watched this movie recently and realized that there is actually very little plot. Regardless, it's very cute (kittens!) and the characters are all hilarious. There's an Irish cat and a French cat and a Russian cat and an Asian cat (maybe a bit stereotypical, but they all are) and a couple of funny hounds.
Atonement (2007)
This movie gets more interesting each time I see it. A strange but depressing story with gorgeous, almost overdone cinematography. Also I love Keira Knightley.
